Chapter 3

Whatever it took, I would not cry, even though the tears burned to break free. Even though I wanted to storm and scream and rip the hair from my father’s perfectly coiffed head.

He refused to look at me. Stared ahead, wrapped in the wrongness of his precious law, like legal writ would save his black soul. Whatever higher power a person believed in, my dad would reap his own rewards someday. Karma’s comeuppance was the only way I could stand to be in the same room with him.

He abandoned my mother to her fate, letting Colōtl kidnap her, letting those monsters sacrifice her in some awful tantric ritual. Councilor Malcolm Sand never chased after her, never pursued the murderers himself. He let ‘justice’ prevail, as he would say.

We viewed the meaning of the word ‘justice’ in quite different ways. Dad would say Colōtl received a fair trial, but true fairness would lead to Colōtl’s death, not a power-strip and exile. I shook my head. “What makes you think I would do anything to aid the man responsible for my mother’s death? And how could you even ask such a thing of me?”

A muscle ticked in my father’s jaw before he deigned to look my way and favor me with a glance. “He isn’t responsible for her death, just her kidnapping. The court found extenuating circumstances. And you are the only person on the continent who shares your mother’s magical legacy. You are rare. A mage, like me, with the unique red sand boa classification sorcery powers from your mother. No one else can get near the group who actually sacrificed her.”

“Nice to see you finally admit Colōtl took your wife, my mother.”

“He was forced.” His words ground out from gritted teeth.

“No one can make you do anything.” My words to Marcel earlier today rang in my ears. “If I could, I would’ve made you go after Mom’s killer.”

“You’re about to find out we’re doing just that.” My father rose to his full height of six-foot-four, like him towering over me would intimidate.

I didn’t bother to rise, just made an out-with-it wave with my hand. We already know who is responsible, Dad.

He swallowed, like the words about to come choked in his throat, but his jaw tightened again before he spoke. “If you do not work with Max Espina to clear his uncle’s name and you do not bring the true culprit in your mother’s death to the Council for judgment, you will be brought forward to the Council to face charges for your own crimes. I know your execution of your ‘occupational duties’ doesn’t always follow the letter of the law. You will serve Luis Colōtl’s sentence. You will be found guilty. You will have your powers permanently removed. You will face exile.”

My crimes. I may not be living in the magical world, but I didn’t want to lose my powers. They were part of what made me me. The magic I inherited from Mom remained the only legacy I had left of her.
